Hyner Race Day Details

Cutoffs

Be aware that we have cut-offs for this event. If you do not agree with this system, please do not sign up. This is a rugged trail race and we understand that not everyone can complete this course. We expect all 25K runners/hikers to finish in under 9 hours, the 50K runners in under 10 hours. The 50K is limited to runners only — it is not to be hiked as you’ll never finish in time.
25K Cut-offs-- All runners/hikers MUST reach the View (mile 4) by 11:30am and the mile 8.5 aid station by 1:30pm or you'll be pulled. These are hard cut-offs. No exceptions. These cut-offs ensure a 9 hour finish.
50K Cut-offs-- Mile 7.5 by 10am or you'll be directed onto the 25K course to finish. Mile 17 by 1pm and mile 25 by 3:15pm. All are hard cut-offs with no wiggle room to ensure a 10 hour finish.

spectator access

Extremely important....the course is very remote and there are no parking areas whatsoever out there. The mountain roads are VERY narrow. The ONLY accessible aid station for the 25k is Hyner View State Park at mile 4. The 50K spectator access areas are Hyner View State Park at mile 3 and Hyner Run State Park at mile 10/25. Please relay this to any and all family/friends attending as spectators.

50K Qualifying Standards

Qualifying standards are in place to ensure both the safety of the runners as well as the consideration of our volunteers on the course. The Hyner 50K is NOT an entry level course and we expect ALL runners to finish in under 10 hours. It is NOT intended for everyone to be able to participate. If you're worried about cut-offs, then you may want to reconsider this event. There are tons of entry level 50K's out there.  Road races do not count as qualifiers as they have no relevance to this sport. Please put down a race and your time that shows you are capable of completing 31 miles in under 10 hours. During the race, runners not getting to the 25/50K intersection by 10am (mile 7.5) will automatically be directed onto the 25K course to finish. Mile 17 aid station at Dry Run Rd cut-off is 1pm. And Hyner Run SP aid station on the way back at mile 25 is 3:15pm.

To participate in the 50k, you must provide proof that you have accomplished one or more of the following:
1. Completed the Hyner 25K course in 4.5 hours or less. Or the Hyner 50K in under 10 hours. No exceptions.
2. Completed any other 50K trail race in 9 hours or less, or any 25K trail race in 4 hours or less. Road races DO NOT count. Sorry. They have no relevance to trail running in the PA Wilds.
3. Completed any trail half marathon in under 3 hours. Examples — Dam Half, Chief Wetona, Hyner Half, the Raven, etc.
4. Completed the Boulder Beast in under 8.5 hours.

Bib pickup & directions

The Hyner View Trail Challenge now starts and finishes at the Eagles Nest (9650 Renovo Rd., Hyner, PA) and is located in the most scenic region of Pennsylvania. Just look for Hyner...that's all you need!!

Since Hyner is a remote area, find Lock Haven and use this as your reference. There is one road leading out of Lock Haven toward Hyner...this is Route 120 West. Starting from Lock Haven University, follow 120 West for about twenty miles. All parking, packet pickup, and race events will take place at the airstrip behind the Eagles Nest. Parking will be in the large field, packet pickup will be in the registration tent adjacent to parking. The start/finish and post-race party will all be held in the same field. Please arrive early. Parking & registering 1,200 people will take some time.

Please take the time to print out directions and study the map before you head out.  Cell phone service is extremely limited/non-existent in the area and it is very remotely populated. If arriving Saturday morning, fire police will direct you into the parking area at the Eagles Nest.
